Update on Ukraine - 12 May 2022
The BCCA has received lots of offers of support for our congenital colleagues
in Ukraine and I am aware that the welfare of their congenital patients is very
much on the minds of BCCA members. I have been in regular contact with Dr Andrii
Maksymenko consultant paediatric cardiologist and medical director at the
Ukrainian Children’s Cardiac Centre (UCCC) in Kyiv.
Amazingly they are continuing their congenital programme often in very
difficult conditions. Their major issue at present is disturbance of the supply
chain for drugs, catheters and PICU equipment. They have let us know what they
are running short of. We have liaised with some of the catheter companies, and
they are organising a delivery of cardiac catheters and wires. Thank you to
Allen Tower at NuMed, Hitesh Tailor at BVM, Daniel McMackin at PFM Medical and
Konstantin Alekseichuk amongst others.
I have discussed with the Chain of Hope charity as to how we can support the
UCCC with their other ongoing needs. We have proposed a joint BCCA/ Chain of
Hope appeal to raise funds to purchase the equipment and drugs and send them
out to Kyiv. We will circulate more details over the next fortnight.
We should be grateful if you could publicise this appeal to your Trusts,
congenital patients’ associations, friends and families to support this
initiative.
